As is often the case with single player mapping, your best bet may be to simply open one of the SP maps, and use a little investigation to discover the way they're used.

If you want to edit a texture, you don't need to select the brush - just select the surface, and use F5 to open its properties (or right click on it and select Surface Properties).

The screens in my sig are from the ends of rounds, modified a bit.

Select all the brushes and actors you want to duplicate (if the one level is all that your map consists of, then the 'select all' feature would help), then use the duplicate command (ctrl-w). Move the newly generated copy of everything to where you want it to go (check your alignment!) and de-select.

Also, you should try to vary the decor in additional levels, or use labels or some other method so the player knows what level they are on. With multiple levels that are perfectly identical, it could become confusing in a hurry.

The abridged version of the skybox tutorial:

Make a separate area off to the side of your map. This will be your skybox. Decorate it with a skydome, static meshes (keep in mind they will appear massive in the final product), and anything else you want in there. Now, place the SkyZoneInfo actor within this separate box in the precise position you want the player's vantage point to be from. Tweak the properties of the SkyZoneInfo if you want to use ambient light in the skybox or anything like that (if you don't use ambient light, be sure to find some other way of lighting the skybox!).

Next, in the border brush of your map (the primary brush in which the whole level is constructed), select the walls and ceiling, go into surface properties, and flag them for "fake backdrop".

That's all there is to it. After a re-build, you can preview your results in the editor with the K key (default), and the sky should be visible ingame.

Worth noting is that if your 'buildings' are static meshes, you will need to convert them to brushes before you try to slice holes in them for player access.

Anyone who knows me knows that I do not build maps for exploration, eye candy or secret useless gizmos. I build em for tactical soundness and competition potential. It is in that spirit that I bring you District 118 - a CTF map suited for 10 to 16 players set in an urban environment.

Highlights include a sewer system to which access can be controlled through switches in the central command building, working particle effects (Spuzz ftw!) and three distinct elevation levels arranged in a rock-paper-scissors format along the map's length.

Teamwork is the order of the day here - the team that controls the center of the map controls a vast majority of the interchanges between elevation levels and can quite literally monopolize the sewers.

You can download the map either through my Filefront page, or directly through this site. Both links are below.

Play smart!

This is truly a breakthrough in cutting a little into RC's cryptic and often primitive AI. I will definitely have to keep up on this - keep up the good work, folks!

The static meshes are imports from Unreal Tournament 2004.

There are tales...tales of power, temptation and betrayal over a thousand generations ago among the champions of the Force, the stewards of mysticism and tradition known as the Jedi Knights. Among those who use the Force are those who use its power for evil - and among these Dark Jedi there are those who wielded awesome power greater than that of any servant of the Light. The Dark Jedi learned to harness their power into scepters, crystals, and other dark, profane artifacts, which amplified their might even further in a cycle of enrichment that had no end.

The mightiest of the Dark Jedi took on the mantle of an ancient warrior species - the Sith. For thousands of years they fought the Jedi, seeking to extinguish those weak enough to treat the Force as a master instead of a servant.

When the greatest Sith Lords fell, almost always in battle, the thousands of worlds under the control of this shroud of darkness sent their finest stonesmiths and builders to the Sith homeworld - Korriban. And here, within the timeless depths of the planet's interior, mighty and majestic tombs were built for each Sith Lord to be entombed within. These structures were beyond compare, and often stretched for entire kilometers covered in the finest metals and materials. A seemingly endless tribute to the power, influence and raw hatred of those who wielded the dark side of the Force, the tombs persisted for hundreds of thousands of years,

The builders were struck down by the servants of the former Lord when they finished their work, and the locations of these tombs thus remained unknown outside the circle of the Sith for thousands of years.

Over millenia, the sarcophagi of the Sith Lords leaked forth the perverse and vengeful dark side energy within themselves, and it expanded and filled their tombs like a toxic gas. The tombs took on lives of their own through the unfathomable strength of the dark side, becoming infested by the very evil, power and darkness that embodied the Sith themselves...

They spontaneously spawned defense mechanisms through the sheer power of the dark side, force-sensitive apparitions and physical traps to ensnare, torture and destroy anyone foolish enough to disturb the Master within the tomb.

Day 621 - Clone Wars

Korriban - "Valley of the Dark Lords"

The tomb was massive. Just...absolutely massive, Cradossk thought to himself. The Dosh language of the Trandoshans had no word to even approximate the concept of something being 'beautiful", but this was the word the hardened warrior found himself seeking. The three slavers and six mercenaries under his command were less able to restrain their emotions.

"By the Jagannath..." one of the mercs whispered in wonder, while two slavers behind him continued to work with laser cutters on widening the breach they had entered through near the entrance to the tomb.

"Be silent! We do not know what awaits us," Cradossk replied sharply.

"This place is like no other in the galaxy..." a different merc whispered.

"Silence! You do as I say, fool!" Cradossk repeated, a bit louder this time. Whatever element of surprise they might have had was gone at this point anyways. Laser cutters were not quiet. He could not help but agree with the merc's assessment, but silence would still be the order of the day until they had secured the place. Judging by its size, it might be awhile.

The two mercs bowed their heads submissively to Cradossk. It was apparent that the sense of wonder at the place extended to the slavers flanking them as well. However, they were not permitted to speak in the company of mercenaries or commanders unless directly spoken to and so they held their tongues. At least they followed orders.

His thoughts betrayed the chain of command, floating back to why the hell they were in this forsaken hole in the first place. The Jedi had taken a larger and larger role in the conflict against the Confederacy in the past months, and this had taken its toll on the forces of the Confederacy. When Cradossk was summoned to the side of Count Dooku himself several days ago, the assignment that had brought him here had revealed itself. "You will go," Dooku had said, "to the tomb of the Sith Lord Naga Sadow. Once there you will find the Dark Lord's robes, and bring them back to me. Only with the strength of the old ones can we defeat the Jedi and end this war at long last." Cradossk had not understood the bit about the 'old ones' and had secretly wanted an elaboration, but those who asked questions of Dooku had a habit of winding up dead. The Count had provided him with a location on the planet Korriban and sent him on his way with a small support squad."Failure," he had told Cradossk, "is not an acceptable outcome."

The chilly abyss of the tomb seemed to stretch on forever in all directions, and the entire place set Cradossk's nerves on end. There was a constant wind blowing across the exposed scales on his hands and feet. There was no visible source for the air, no exposure to the outside world, and Cradossk was strangely unable to discern where it originated from. No matter which way he faced, the wind was always blowing into his face, with an undeniably alien sensation. The darkness also troubled him. Trandoshan eyes could easily see in the dark, but Cradossk soon realized there was something about this place, something...different about the darkness which dwelled in its corners, and contrary to all common sense the lizard's acute reptilian eyes could not pierce it. The idea of being in a place whose boundaries they did not know, and whose darkness they could not uncover and expose was genuinely unsettling.

Cradossk had heard the stories as much as any Trandoshan had of the people within tombs like this one - the stories of the clan that Dooku had come from, the clan of Jedi who used the mystical energy of the Force for their own personal gain. Occult rituals, sacred artifacts and unimaginable power and influence were the specialties of the dark side, and the tomb Cradossk stood in seemed to put a physical form on all these things. The Force, the tales said, could do amazing and otherworldly things to a person's soul when he gave his life to it and learned to command it as a sharpshooter commands his rifle, or a duelist his blade.

The darkness in this place, Cradossk conceded, was the darkness of evil - the most advanced optics in the galaxy could not see in it. The wind, he conceded in turn, was the wind of the screams of thousands of the old Jedi crushed beneath the boot of Naga Sadow himself. Just as it had nearly destroyed the entire galaxy to stop Naga Sadow, so too would it take the galaxy's destruction to silence this wind, Cradossk thought to himself.

Cradossk's comlink sparked to life, breaking his concentration. The team that had breached the adjacent end of the tomb was trying to reach him.

"I told you to maintain radio silence, brother! What is it?" Cradossk yelled into the comlink, now extremely annoyed with people making noise after being told not to.

"Ambush!" came the loud, frantic reply from the other end of the device. Cradossk's squad overheard the communique and immediately raised their weapons.

"It's a trap!" added the other officer, probably unnecessarily. "Republic troops are here!"

Blaster fire and ACP rounds rang out on the other side of the comlink, giving credit to the reports of an attack. One of the slavers on radar duty in Cradossk's squad suddenly spoke up. (When slavers spoke to their superiors, it was usually under the condition that the importance of what they had to say would compensate for the breach of protocol.)

"Sir! From all sides, hostile targets inbound!" the slaver exclaimed. He had barely finished his sentence when blaster fire erupted - from an unknown source, but most definitely heading in their direction. Cradossk cursed to himself in frustration and rage, ducking behind one of the nearby pillars.

"Hold the line!" Cradossk shouted.

Damn you, Dooku. Damn you, the Trandoshan thought to himself. The reptilian warriors were not known for their wisdom, but even Cradossk was smart enough to know that some secrets were best left buried...
