General / Star Wars Galaxy 3D
December 24, 2007, 11:06:00 AM
(update May 1st 2008)

---------
(older stuff)

Star Wars Galaxy 3D is a project of a few German SW-enthusiasts (mainly Namek Kural, the programmer and "founder"), which will let everyone discover the galaxy of SW from an entirely new perspective. The programm will display planets of the the galaxy three-dimensionally and give you detailled information on them in one click.
Right now there is a Logo-Contest going on where everyone is invited to show off their 1337-Uber-SkillZ. The winning logo will be featured in the program itself, as well as on the website, where the top candidates will get a gallery, too.
Check out the website, which is available in English and German, and the forum, to which applies the same, here:
CLICK!

I'm just gonna copy this from the official website...
QuoteNow it is ready, as promised, I have now updated the "Downloads" area, where the program can now be downloaded.
Since it is still v0.2 it is a program in beta phase, errors may occur. If so, please tell me about them immediately, so I can correct them. A contact form can be found in the "Downloads" section.

The "Galaxy 3D" will, of course, be free to download, as this project is a fan-project, but I would be happy about donations via PayPal which you can do through the appropriate button in the Downloads section.

The program will initially be released only for Windows, as I don't get a Mac before spring next year. Until then I can only develop for the Windows platform.
As soon as I have the opportunity, I will, thanks to the Irrlicht engine, be able to port the program very quickly to the Mac platform.
To all Mac users: I will do my best! As soon as possible.

Here's a little starter course for navigating through the galaxy:
With the left mouse button you can rotate the camera around the currently selected planet.
With the middle mouse button (or if you have the right + left mouse button pressed), you can zoom by dragging left or right.
With the right mouse button you can move the camera view.

Try it out, it is not really difficult ;-)

NOTE: Most articles are not yet included, only included in German, or very brief. Same goes for textures. It is planned for the final version to have individual textures for each planet, if the performance won't suffer too much. A button to switch to hologram-view will then too be implemented. Please show a little understanding, because this is the first public release and only v0.2. Of course it is furthermore planned to include support for multiple languages, at least German and English, otherwise it wouldn't make much sense to post it here^^

I hope I could popularize this great program a bit internationally, as until now, only a few German fans knew that it even existed...

Merry Christmas!

Announcements / Aband0ned?
June 29, 2007, 09:01:19 PM
Sooo...
Are these forums ultimately dead? :?
I don't even get Spambots trying to registe anymore. :(
Makes me kinda sad, though, of course, we all knew it was coming. The RC Community has never been big and the modding community was even smaller. But what are you guys doing now? Have you deserted to another UEngine Game? Waiting and practicing for UnrealEngine3 or what? Or just quit modding for good? :|

Rest in pieces, RC :(

edit: btw...
LAST POST! HAHAHA!

Modeling / DooFi's Models
March 21, 2007, 10:13:23 AM

A crate that will get a nice numpad ingame, but - of course - it's meant for blowing it open ;)

A cell of the kind which you see in Ep II on geonosis, above which the prisoner hovers (wtf?)

An observation camera that is of course finished by now. The screen is WIP. It even moves very nicely in UT

These are meant for my SP map dealing with Sev's escape. I hope i will ever finish it

As you all know, it's pretty unlikely that we will get COOP-maps (meaning Multiplayer Maps with NPCs behaving according to an AI) to work, because it seems the developers disabled AI for the multiplayer part of RC, this area is now called Singleplayer-Mapping, and shall assist modders with learning how to create maps for singleplayer-purposes. RC's singleplayer part offers many more possibilities anyways! Karma, Emitters and AI to name a few. Should be fun, mates. We hope to pwn some NPCs soon!

I did this without your permission, Sandcrawler. Please forgive me ;)

oh and... sorry for the title xD I don't own the english version of RC,
I'm don't know if that what Boss says in english when something needs to be blown up^^

Unreal Engine 2 General Modding Chat / 8800 anyone? -.-
January 14, 2007, 11:25:24 AM
RC and RC's UnrealED don't want to run on my new computer. I believe its the geforce8800gts, which causes Problems with other games (Splinter Cell DA -.-) as well. Did someone else experience the same problems with this graphics-card? I want this game to run, as I am planning a nice map -.-

oh btw.. Unrealeditor from UT2k4 works just fine oO

edit: i'm now downloading the latest nvidia patch (97.92)

Modeling / 3D-Software and free models
November 30, 2006, 09:18:19 AM
Here are a few links to free modelling software and download sources for free models.

Free 3D-Software

Blender is a full functional integrated 3D creation software suite. It lets users create high quality 3D graphics, movies and replay real-time, interactive 3D content.
www.blender3d.org
Check out this site for *.ASE (Ascii Scene Export) export-plugins as well.
http://www.quake3bits.com/htm/tools_utilities.htm#ase

Softimage offers a free version of the popular tool Softimage:XSI on their website. All you need to do is sign up, download the tool and the UnrealEngine-Plugin and start modelling. The free version has everything you need included. There are also documentations available.
The commercial version of XSI was used for HL2 and SWBF2 among others. XSI is a very popular package in the game industry. You should definitely check it out.
www.softimage.com

GMax is a limited version of 3D Studio Max, which is obviously the standard game-art package and one of the most popular 3D Software available. You can basically apply any modeling tutorial about 3DSMax to GMax. And there are thousands of 3DSMax tuts out there. As 3DSMax probably the most used 3D package in the industry, you should at least work with GMax, if you want to work in the industry...
GMax's development has been stopped and you can only get the latest version on TurboSquid. You have to sign up, which is free afaik.
http://www.turbosquid.com/gmax

Wings 3D is best suited for modeling and texturing low-polygon meshes, towards which its interface is geared. Compared to other open-source modeling programs like Blender, it is minimalistic. This allows a very flexible way of working, but it also means that Wings 3D is more limited than other modeling programs in certain areas. For instance, Wings 3D cannot handle animations. YOu can get used to it very fast and it provides an excellent UV-Mapper.

Free Models
Note that you will probably have to mention the original artist! Don't be an ass and claim copied models as your own ;) Also make sure the models you download are LOW-POLYGON models, so they don't eat up too much GPU-power!

SciFi3D offers StarWars- and StarTrek-Related models and many Science Fiction Models more.
http://scifi3d.theforce.net/

TurboSquid has commercial models as well as free models.

Please give credit to the texture/model-creators when you release your map!

Hi... I just feel like announcing my map here, too. It's still not ready to release and in addition UnrealED crashes everytime i rebuild all. So i don't have a clue, what to do now :/

So here's the page where you can watch ca 50 screens of the map. They don't really show the latest state of the map, but you can get a nice glimpse at the atmosphere and setting.

check the old forum's thread for the old comments and stuff...

hope you like what you see :D

btw: these forums really need a new design. Maybe adopting the colors of the old forums would be cool
