Title: Changing Sounds/Ambience
Post by: Jedi_Mediator on January 16, 2007, 01:21:26 PM
(Copied and pasted from FileFront Forums)

I understand that Republic Commando is very difficult to mod, but I have a question anyway. There are several weapon's sounds that I would like to replace with new ones, along with replacing some of the ambience, as well. How would this be possible? Would I need a program like Pakscape (only for Q3 games, I know) to open up the special filetypes?

no, you can access the sound packages via UnrealED, just like texture- and SM-packages as well. You'd not be able to play the game online with altered packages, so you have to keep backup files if you want to change original sounds.

Where could I download UnrealED?

if you have instelled patch 1.00, then it's in your /system/ directory. Unrealed.exe, i believe.

URGG yes, I looked on the internet and that's what everyone says. However, this just happens to be a REPUBLIC COMMANDO SITE, doesn't it? Or, at least, that's what I gathered...

No, I do not have UT (yes, yes, go ahead and slap me with a large fish). Is there any *other* way to get the Editor?

wtf are you complaining about? Install patch 1.00 and head to the system folder, it's there. trust me

Okay, I decided to just download the UT2004 patch to get the program. However, UnrealED doesn't seem to want to start up...I get a Critical Error message that says:

Build UT2004_Build_[2005-11-23_16.22]

OS: Windows XP 5.1 (Build: 2600)
CPU: AuthenticAMD PentiumPro-class processor @ 2210 MHz with 511MB RAM
Video: No Video

Can't find 'ini:Engine.Engine.ViewportManager' in configuration file

History: UObject::SafeLoadError <- UObject::StaticLoadClass <- UEditorEngine::Init <- UUnrealEdEngine::Init <- InitEngine

I'm guessing this has something to do with the fact that I don't have the game itself. Is there still a way to use the program?

Dude, what the crap have you just done?! O_o
You do NOT need unreal torunament. What you need is skill and Republic Commando with the latest patch. Since there was only one patch at all, it is obviously patch 1.00. Got it? Download RC Patch 1.00 and head to the /system/ folder. There you'll find UnrealED.exe. It's called Unrealed.exe, because it originally derives fromn the Unreal Engine, but it has nothing to do with Unreal Tournaments editor! They just look the same, but you cannot exchange files between them.

OHHHHHH! I thought you meant to download a patch for UT 2004, not Republic Commando :P Well, in that case, confusion is cleared up. It turns out that I downloaded that patch a while back. Thanks for your help!

Okay, I'm having a little trouble here. I can't find any button that lets me replace sounds! How do I do this?

lol, of course there is no button for replacing sounds xD What do you expect? YOu have to learn the philosophy of UnrealED first, then you'll be able to replace sounds or textures without any problem.
You must know that there are several browsers. There is a texture-browser, in which you can find lots of textures. In addition there are browsers for actors, static meshes, particle effects, animations and also sounds. Once you open up the sound-browser there are several buttons for browsing, deleting, moving and creating new sounds.

It might help to take tut's on UE... kinda makes it easier (even though it's still a piece of art made from crap O.o)

ARRRGHHH! How come I never seem to be able to get my point across...

i CAN'T replace the sounds. I import a sound, and it doesn't even appear in the LIST. How, then, am I supposed to do anything with sounds at all??
Title:
Post by: DooFi on January 20, 2007, 09:51:51 AM
the browser uses Packages, Groups and Names to sort the files. Make sure you enter the correct values and the ed will replace automatically
Title:
Post by: Jedi_Mediator on January 21, 2007, 06:27:28 AM
But it DOESN'T! I enter the exact name of the sound I want to replace, and it still sounds the same when I play it (example: I am trying to replace the tranShotgun sound. However, I still hear the default gun sound after I enter the exact name)! Is this supposed to happen??

pitifully i cannot access my UnrealEditor, so I'm not able to test this for you, sorry :/

Can anybody point me to an UnrealED tutorial, preferably one that deals with editing *files* instead of *maps*?
Title:
Post by: explode on January 24, 2007, 04:15:59 PM
Dude, if you want to change the sounds, that involves mapping, learn how to map *duh*.
If you take it slow your patience will be rewarded, also, if you want to change the *files* you won't be able to play multiplayer, so be careful!!!!
Title:
Post by: Squad_Sammaron on January 25, 2007, 03:36:38 PM
yea um... i'd try file import for your sounds...
Title:
Post by: Jedi_Mediator on January 28, 2007, 03:31:13 PM
1)  How the **** does changing sounds involve mapping??

2) I DID!!!! BUT THEY DON'T IMPORT WHEN I *PRESS* IMPORT....they don't show up in the list, like I said before.

Ok Jedi, your files have to be in *WAV format to import.
The mapping part of changing the sounds is that you have to find (or place) the ambient sound actor and open up it's properties.
I will write a short tutorial that tells you how to change the sound in an existing retail map *BACK UP YOUR MAP FOLDER!*
1.BACK UP YOUR MAP FOLDER (preferably to your desktop)
2.Fire up Unreal Editor
3.Open up the map you want to change the sound on (I'll use DM_ZeroG for this tut)
4.Open up the sound browser
5.hit file>import, then find your *WAV sound file
6.change the package to "mylevel"
7.Hit "ok all"
8.Find the zone info in the map (the box with the question mark by it)
9.Double click on it
10.go to "zone sound"
11.open the sound browser
12.go to the mylevel package
13.find your sound
14.have it selected
15.go back to the zone info's properties
16.change the zone audio class to be your sound
17.close the properties
18.build all
19.save
20.play
21.enjoy
22.Thank Explode

I'll write another on how to change the blaster sounds and stuff.
Just don't get mad dude, we're here to help!

Well, yes, see...the files ARE in .WAV format--at least I think they are. They registered as .WAV when I was importing them (in the "open" window), but they just did not show up in the list.

So, does this mean that if I change a gun or explosion sound, I will no longer be able to play MP? That doesn't seem too reasonable...

yes it is. The game detects differences between your files and the files of the host and doesn't let you join, because you could be a cheater or have a wrong version...

Woo, one of the first things I found out. Importing sounds works as well as the 'Play Level' button, which means it doesn't. Editors with missing features suck, but this is one of them.

Erm. ...All right then!... Does this mean that I cannot do what I am proposing--even if it is for SP? Or is there some other version/update of UnrealED I could download?

I know, that i once played EDM in a map using Ambience sound. oO
But i believe you have to convert your sounds to .ogg first! Try that.

but--butbutbut---I thought sounds had to be in WAV???

try oggs and unrealed will tell you^^ as i said, i cannot test it :(
Title:

.ogg is the filetype for the -music- in the game, but I haven't tested the conversion myself, so all bets are off on that idea.

Oh and, using ambience is just a setting in the ZoneInfo, with a list to pick from, has nothing to do with importing/replacing.

That's weird, importing sounds works fine for me...

importin sounds sounds (hehe funny :D) pretty not worth it anyway. if you're going to make new sounds, it'd probably be for a new game. RC covered a good range of sounds and versitality. for modifying sounds, i'd open something to records sounds. then make a copy of any sound and leave on in the folder under orriginal name and the other as the name of your new sound. Take the copied sound (the one with your new name on it) and record over it. technically, i think it should be imported allready, and it will just refresh sound. if that doesn't work, try overwriting a sound you don't need and do this without the copied sound. it's worth a shot right?
